DeleteGood writing can help attract customers. Whether it's through flyers, newspaper ad's, or billboards, good writing can aid with the non-verbal aspect of communication that is involved with business and its management. It can also help with the verbal communication aspect as well because I believe striving for good writing can help expand our ways of critical thinking, which of course is definitely beneficial in any, if not all career fields.

Is Revision the point at which you start to add more to an essay or trim it? If you trim it, why?
ReplyDeleteI look at revision as both adding and trimming. When your done with your first draft or say half way done, you then revise what you have done up to that point and sometime you will realize you went of course and need to trim some out, or you might find out you still have alot more to say about the subject so you add more.
DeleteRevision is for readability, logic, and clarity. Your question is related to mine because I was wondering how to write to an audience that would not really be familiar with engineering jargon. Revision it is. I do not know about trimming it, but using a good thesaurus would probably help.
DeleteI look at revision as the moment you start to add or trim. You will have the first draft which you will go back and add or trim or even both. That is the revision. You may have multiple revisions. I would trim if I find that in my revision there is something off topic or something that I may not be able to elaborate on due to insufficient research.

What makes good writing in the engineering field? Must one focus on a certain audience? How to do that when engineering terminology is almost impossible to explain in simple language?
ReplyDeleteHi Daniel, I really liked the way you asked your open question (s). In Engineering terminology as you stated is almost impossible to explain in simple language. By asking this question to the person you might interview, you will more than likely get a better understanding of how they view good writing in the Engineering world. My major will be in Education and I will be interviewing a teacher via e-mail, you gave me a good idea as to more specific questions that I could possibly ask the teacher I will be interviewing and getting to a more profound ground. DeleteI believe that procrastination can help some students as they work better under pressure. It can hurt you however if you are one that does not work well under pressure. Procrastination can lead to poor research and not enough time for revisions. Your work may be incomplete and therefore your grades may suffer.
DeleteYou wont make the best out of your opportunity given. You will probably end up turning late assignments that don't show your true potential, resulting in low grades. Which makes it harder to pursue a career that interests you.

DeleteGood writing is your construct, and I like that you're focusing on an element of good writing: structure. I suggest you focus your essay in terms of 1) your major or 2) one or more personal interests. If your major, for instance, consider developing your sentence around an exploration of the role of structure within the writing required for your major. If personal interest, for example, you could develop a question that looks at how structure plays a role in writing for your favorite video game, or your favorite musical artist in his/her songs. These are just examples; the trick is to be as specific as possible. Specificity will help you find the best primary/secondary sources possible.

If you go into a courtroom and start speaking like your five year old wrote your argument and the defendant or plaintiffs attorney speaks like he came from Harvard who do you think they are going to believe is making the better case?

DeleteLaw is a formidable career, so best of luck with that. Let's add some precision to your question. Since you are a student, why not focus on the types of writing strategies that future law school students should adopt in order to apply for law school? For example, to get into law school you will most probably need to take an entrance exam, which will include an essay. As a UTPA student, what strategies are you developing in order to pass this exam? A good idea would be to look for sample entrance exams from your desired law school, and see what kind of requirements they have in terms of writing. Based on this type of research, you could then look to gather information that will allow you to write an essay for Stage 4 similar to Diaz's essay, which would provide tips/strategies for all other students on the same path as you.

I like this question because it's different. People just care if the artist's voice sounds good. Many people don't look into the writing of music. For example, Lennon's song "Imagine" was inspired by a poem.

What have the theorists had to say in our class, such as D&W, H&F, etc.? By doing so, here's an example of where your questions could go: What makes Jay-Z's musical compositions so lyrical? How does Jay-Z construct his lyrics, and how is that good writing? Develop your question along these lines.

Nevertheless, I think we can make this question even more intriguing by giving it contemporary and geographic relevance. We live in the Valley, a very unique area where cultures are in a perpetual mix, so why not focus this question on the advantages/disadvantages of developing bilingual strategies? Your questions could go something like this: What are the advantages/disadvantages of bilingualism for UTPA students? How does bilingualism help/hinder UTPA students on an everyday basis? If you go with a major, you can make this question even more precise: What are some of the advantages/disadvantages of bilingualism for UTPA Psychology students? These are just examples, but hopefully they help you see where you can take your question.

You are interested in language circulation, but let's narrow this down to UTPA. Your question then becomes something like this: What advantages do Spanish-speaking students have over non-Spanish speaking students at UTPA? We can focus this even further by specifying your major. Here's an example: What advantages do Spanish-speaking Psych majors have over non-Spanish Psych majors at UTPA? These are just examples to help you see where to take this question.
